Bands Or Jesus Who Do Christian TShirts Really Advertises
There are a number of types of Christian t-shirts which the musicians themselves wear, some of which are also available to their fans. Although bands in the harder rock and metal genres usually prefer general, plain t-shirts that aren't specifically “Christian” in nature, and Christian music festivals offer special t-shirts to commemorate the occasions, the two styles of t-shirts which are the most controversial are the shirts with the bands' names on them, and the t-shirts with specifically-Christian messages such as Scripture quotes or other uplifting phrases. The question would be which of these latter styles are best fitting the purpose-- the purpose being to lead the audience to a life of faith, or, for those who are already there, to strength it?
On one side of the subject the designs are self-explanatory. Kids in the Way, Emery, Demon Hunter, Disciple, and many others have their names emblazoned on t-shirts; some include the name of their latest albums. While these t-shirts are nice for fans of these bands, it is good to see that few of the band members themselves wear shirts like this, for it could easily be taken as self-promotion, and that might actually be the case. Names of Christian bands do not exactly make them “Christian t-shirts.” The point of Christian t-shirts is to generate interest in and standing for Christ, not for the bands.
On the other side, and better, are the t-shirts which do make that point. Whether it is a bit of humor done in good taste, or quotes from Scripture, wearing them is a way to present oneself as a Christian. Unfortunately, these types of Christian t-shirts do not appear to be very popular amongst most Christian bands and musicians.
In general they are nearly non-existent, except in instances of special events such as festivals, or when band members get together with other people; such proclamation of one's faith, in the form of clear messages on t-shirts, are not widely seen on Christian bands when they are performing on stage for their fans.
The bands surely know that their choices of attire influences their fans, especially the younger audiences. They know the wonderful manner in which such things as their style of music and their form of lyrics can affect those who listen to their music; so while their fans can continue to be able to buy t-shirts with their favorite bands' names on the front, the bands themselves should put a little more focus on their influencing power and present the message they wish to convey to their fans-- that to give the message of God's word is what is really important.
