Christian T-shirts Today

Christian T-shirts have come a long way from the first flock font shirts that displayed the names and emblems of church-associated schools, universities such as Loyola and Notre Dame, and the YM and YWCA’s.

Post WWII and throughout most of the 1950’s, the phrase, “Christian T-shirt,” meant almost exclusively the team identification shirts worn by boys and young men participating in Church League athletics. Their implied messages were simple, yet profound: voluntary loyalty to scholarship with honor and subscription to the conscious practice of good sportsmanship. As plain in style as they were Back in the Day, or spruced up and more distinctive in color and design – buyer’s choice – Christian school and athletic team shirts are still around. Daily, these Christian T’s make their way into the eager hands of scholars and sports enthusiasts, who wear them proudly as badges of identification and that’s all good, but it’s not all.

Today’s Christian T’s are just as likely to identify their wearers as Christian bikers as ball players, or to mark them as Christian surfers or skateboarders as to show they are members of a Prayer Club. Christian rock and gospel groups are represented by fan and tour shirts of highly artistic design.

In addition to identification shirts, this year’s Christian T-shirt buyer can choose from a variety of “Message" shirts. The following categories are my own, but will give some idea of the types of shirts currently available.

“Good News” Christian T’s celebrate the miracle of salvation. Their messages refer to conversion and to the converted state of the wearer. They act as an open invitation to all who see them to find the same joy and inner peace as the person who stands before them in the shirt. Closely related to “Good News” Christian T’s are “Praise” shirts that declare His Glory and “Celebration” shirts that relay the idea that a life in Christ is worth celebrating every day.

The messages on “Patriotic” Christian T’s affirm America as a Christian nation led by God. They often ask for God’s blessing upon the nation and employ national symbols, such as the American flag and the American eagle, in their designs. “Multicultural” Christian T’s convey the idea that regardless of color or place of origin, we are the people of one world, watched over by One Christian Father and we are equal in His eyes. “Ethnicity”-themed Christian T’s, not as easy to find as multicultural T’s, stress the spread of Christianity in particular countries and among particular racial groups. Some Christian T-shirts are bilingual; some even use sign language to convey their messages.

“Challenge” shirts, more confrontational than “Good News” shirts, urge the viewer to change his life for something better, to not wait in making the all-important decision to give his life to God. “Nature-Inspired” Christian T’s emphasize God as the Creator of all things, the Source of All Life, and the Maker of the Earth, Who has entrusted this planet to us as temporary caretakers only. “Christian T-Shirts of the Promise” or “Christian Support” T-shirts remind the wearer of God’s promises and His nearness as an ever-present help and support in difficult times. Christian T-shirts that display images and messages referring to the crucifixion, or “Passion” shirts, are among the most graphic and bold in design. They press the viewer to acknowledge that Christ died for him.

“Word play” Christian T’s can be serious or lighthearted. Among the first Christian message-T’s manufactured, these shirts make use of parody, puns, double meanings, and acronyms (a series of initials that stands for a phrase). Sometimes these shirts adapt facsimiles of well-known commercial logos, symbols, and product labels as the basis for their word play. Popular “Scripture” T’s display Bible verses, while “Poetic” Christian T’s feature words from the Psalms, snippets of Christian song lyrics, faith-inspired poetry or short Christian prose or memorable quotations from Christian writers.

“Seasonal-themed” Christian T-shirts illustrate events in Christ’s life according to season – the Nativity, the Epiphany or the journey of the Magi, Easter and the Resurrection. They also include secular holidays such as Thanksgiving, Mother’s Day, etc. “Bible Story” Christian T’s for the younger set make reference to the most loved and most easily understood of the Biblical stories. Also for kids are the “Coloring Book” shirts, which imitate the design of a page from a Christian-themed coloring book. Sometimes these come with non-toxic fabric crayons or fabric markers.

“Special Event” Christian T’s evidence participation in Vacation Bible Schools and special church programs, young people’s groups, project groups, mission fieldwork, liturgical conferences and music festivals, church anniversaries, centennials, and homecomings and national events such as the World Day of Prayer.

“Family” Christian T’s are customized shirts that reflect the changes that take place in the life of a Christian family as a unit and in the lives of its separate members. These are usually co-designed by the person placing the order and the background art is often a reproduction of a favorite personal photograph.

Whatever the message category, popular Christian T-shirts are here to stay. Understandably, it is an expanding market. In Christian T’s, word and art combine to give testimony to that which is more ancient than all of us; yet ever new. Christian T-shirts re-affirm that God loves us right here and right now with all of our flaws, faults and misgivings. They also testify that in our own painfully human way, we love Him back.
