Feeding More Than Their Stomachs-Food For The Hungry
Scientists have made the observation that if we were to decrease our eating habits, especially that of ordering more than we can and/or should consume, in a short period of time the earth as a whole would have such an abundance of food that we could wipe out famine altogether. Now, I do not know if this statement is completely true or not, but I do know that there is once non-profit company that is willing to try their best to wipe it out.
Food for the Hungry's (http://www.fh.org) mission is to feed those in need all across the world, including our own United States, but not only their physical needs. Food for the Hungry understands that God instructed us to feed more than just bread and water to one another. We are also to feed them the Word of God, for it feeds us much more than any bread we can make today.
Whether it be here in the States, or in more exotic locales such as Bangladesh, Mozambique, Cambodia, Ethiopia, or even the Philippines, there are many all across this world who are hungry for the truth and cleansing power that can only come from knowing the Lord Jesus Christ. Many people are starving to death for this information, and this organization is making sure as many as possible are hearing it – many for the first time.
Now, don't let their name fool you. There are several other ways they also help out these countries, some of which I would like to list for you now. One of my favorites is what they call, 'food securities.' A great way to understand this program is by the saying, “Feed a man a fish, he will be filled for a day. Teach him to fish, and he will be fed for life.” Food for the Hungry helps teach communities farming techniques and works hard to increase soil production so that abundant crops may be formed.
Another program favorite of mine is entitled, 'child development.' Through a loving dedication to the children of these communities, the organization provides parental counseling to those struggling to raise their children in a righteous way, as well as educating the children with new skills that will develop over time to help out their community. Of course, this also means building the schools, providing school supplies and hiring volunteer teachers.
Finally, one other program I enjoy to share with you is their health program. Through this program, many children and even some adults are given a new lease on life, when originally they would have been doomed to die a painful, slow death of sickness and starvation. Volunteers help also in teaching the community of being faithful in relationships and the dangers of the HIV/AIDS virus, while also helping those who have already contracted the horrendous disease.
As with any worthy cause, the Food for the Hungry organization can always use donations of time, support through prayer, and anything else God lays upon your heart to give. I pray that this article may have helped give you insights into what this cause is doing in and for this world, and what a blessing they have been and continue to be.
