The Christian T-shirt Industry: Time for Evolution?
It’s just a prediction, but it makes plenty of sense. As online marketing makes the purchase of Christian T-shirts more convenient for consumers, the market can only expand. The question is, will it also evolve in ways that will allow it to reach presently under served segments of the Christian consumer base?
If we consider the popular Christian T’s currently available for purchase as the first design wave, what will the second be like? For some time, the concept of the popular Christian T-shirt has been begging for a new definition. So far, the basic idea has been good and a change in the design imperative would not mean that the Christian T as we know it would disappear. On the contrary. Why let go of a successful thing? On the other hand, why not further refine the product in such a way as to make it more appealing to target markets as yet untapped.
Call them ultra-conservative, fashion-conscious, or just plain particular – whatever you call these consumers, they wait for a line of Christian T’s that will be comfortable for them. These are the people who pass over most of the popular Christian T-shirt designs as too obvious, too lightly humorous or even silly, and, at the worst, pointless. As Christian consumers, they look for T-shirts that will be edifying to others, that will with all seriousness honor God with thought-provoking messages where the statement of praise is quiet, but deeply thought out. Calm, conservative shirts of subdued, serviceable color, good style and fine workmanship. Christian T-shirts that do and, at the same time, do not call undue attention to themselves.
The model for this kind of T-shirt has been around for a long time. It’s called a designer shirt or a designer tee. On these shirts, the brand name or logo often doubles as the message. At present, only a few popular Christian T’s fall into this category. Most of the designs on Christian T’s currently being marketed are simple horizontal, vertical, radial, cruciform or pyramidal designs. Christian T-shirts sold to promote Christian rock groups have moved a step further ahead, making liberal use of assymetrical placement of words and objects. Less common are designs that rely on overall patterning and multiple frames. Christian T’s that contain a small, single design element, not centrally placed are decidedly in the minority. These latter types of classic design, when used effectively, can result in some terrific faith-inspired clothing.
A second Christian T-shirt frontier awaiting exploration involves choice of materials and inks used. It might just be time for the Christian T-shirt industry to “go green.” 100% organic and recycled cotton fabrics are now available for use as are ecologically friendly inks and dyes. Environmentally conscious Christians would no doubt be pleased to find Christian T-shirts of tasteful design that would reduce, rather than add to, their carbon footprint.
A third area in the Christian T-shirt industry that bears watching is the increasing trend toward T-shirt customization or personalization. Modern printing techniques have made this possible. A good design staff, willing to help consumers merge text and image into a single synergistic unit and to suggest the unpredictable once in a while, would appeal to buyers who want one-of-a-kind Christian T’s.
The popular Christian T-shirt is here to stay and in future, depending upon the tolerance of Christian T-shirt suppliers for design experimentation, will continue to serve a large or larger audience of consumers.
