Two Ways to Recycle Old Christian T-shirt
We all know that we should recycle whenever possible, and yet we collect and collect, T-shirts, especially. Why not make a popular Christian T-shirt quilt? Think about the beautiful softness of aged T-shirt jersey; observe how your Christian T-shirts have faded over time, note how their messages have become visually thin; the way the colors in their images have gentled and become lovely in a different way than when they were new. Now, imagine those words and images as large quilt patches, backed by another material, and sewn together. It’s a project worth doing, even if it does involve a little gathering and, perhaps, even a little purposeful aging of a few of your Christian T’s.
If you do decide to make a popular Christian T-shirt quilt, you will do well to view it as a long-term project. That said, you can find the shirts you need in a number of economical ways. The minute you make your intention known, your friends will probably begin to gift you with a variety of Christian T’s; post-season sales offer good opportunities to purchase the shirts you need; on occasion, yard sales will yield Christian T-shirt gold. As for the actual quilt construction, almost all of us know an experienced quilter who will help, and there is always a book that can guide you through the foreign territory of quilt batting and quilt backing for your Christian T-shirt squares. If you persevere, in the end you will have a quilt that is not only a comfort at night, but a conversation piece, and even a witness of your faith to the people who visit your home.
You say quilting is not for you, but your Christian T-shirts have become old or you have grown tired of them. If you would like to get more wear out of them, you might consider throwing a Christian T-shirt embellishment party. Ask everyone you invite to bring two Christian T’s, one to embellish and one to swap. Have on hand a variety of ribbons, buttons, strips of lace, beads, pieces of material, embroidery thread, and so forth. Give everyone present a needle and thread and tell your guests to embellish as they choose. Set a time limit for the work. At the end of that specified time, participants will keep the Christian T’s they’ve begun to embellish and pass the other to the person on their left. Each participant will go home with two shirts. A month later, the party will re-convene, except this time, your guests will show both of their shirts, completely embellished and unique.
Whether your recycling projects involve hours of solitary concentration or a few evenings of fellowship and fun, you will be giving your favorite Christian T-shirts a new life.
